Saint Mary's defeats Moncton 3-2 and advances to Subway AUS women's volleyball championship final
(FREDERICTON, N.B.) - The No. 1-ranked Saint Mary’s Huskies women’s volleyball team defeated the fifth-ranked Université de Moncton Aigles Bleues in the semi-final round of the Subway AUS women's volleyball championship.
(FREDERICTON, N.B.) - The No. 1-ranked Saint Mary's Huskies women's volleyball team defeated the fifth-ranked Université de Moncton Aigles Bleues in the semi-final round of the Subway AUS women's volleyball championship.
Moncton, who defeated fourth-ranked Memorial in yesterday's quarterfinal, came out with momentum, but the ranked Huskies took the first set 25-22.
Les Aigles Bleues came back to win the second set 25-22 and pulled ahead by winning the third set 25-19.
Moncton pulled ahead early in the fourth, but Saint Mary's rallied back and managed to come away with a close 25-21 win and the game headed into a fifth deciding set.
The Huskies took the fifth set in convincing fashion, topping les Aigles Bleues 15-3 to win the match 3-2.
Moncton's Geneviève LeBlanc (a second team all-star from Dieppe, N.B.) tallied 13 kills and 11 digs and Christelle Bertin (an all-rookie team member from Beresford, N.B.) recorded 10 kills and 18 digs.
AUS MVP and first team all-star Rachel Windhorst (Surrey, B.C.) of the Huskies delivered 20 kills and 15 digs. Fellow first team all-star Shelby Michaels (Mill Bay, B.C.) had 14 kills and 16 digs for the Huskies as well.
Subway player of the game for Saint Mary's was Shelby Michaels with 14 kills and 16 digs. Subway player of the game for Moncton was Véronique Carroll (an AUS second team all-star from Moncton, N.B.).
Saint Mary's now moves on to play the winner of the second semi-final matchup between Dalhousie and UNB in the AUS final on Sunday, Feb. 15, at 2 p.m.
