V-Reds sweep Capers 3-0, pick up third win of season
(FREDERICTON, N.B.) - In AUS women's volleyball action Saturday afternoon at the Richard J. Currie Center, the UNB Varsity Reds women's volleyball team defeated the visiting Cape Breton Capers by a score of 3-0 to improve to 3-6 on the season.

The individual scores of each set were: 25-11, 25-20, and 25-20.
UNB started the match strong pulling out early 7-3 with help from a strong visit to the service line by outside hitter Jacqueline Sebetovsky. Serving continued to be a strong point for the V-Reds with Vanja Mitrovic recording one of her six service aces to increase the lead, 16-6. A final kill from middle Rebecca Glancy, ended the opening set 25-11 for UNB.
The second set was much more evenly matched. Cape Breton's Sarah Jane Ferguson made some big kills to keep up the even pace with the V-Reds at an early, 10-10 tally.
Mitrovic and Abba continued to lead the V-Reds, building a small 14-12 differential at the midway point. The Capers fought back, with some solid net play from Ferguson to keep things close, tying the match up at 20-20.
The V-Reds proved to be too much for the Capers, as Glancy once again knocked down the final point to take the set 25-20.
Mitrovic went back to the service line to start the third set, quickly racking up a 6-1 lead. Glancy added to her total 12 kills to make the score 12-5 and some Cape Breton errors extended the lead to 18-11. The Capers inched closer to 19-14 on a block at the net from Allana Rendell. With their backs against the wall the Capers pulled up to 24-20 with a crucial block from Cassie MacDonald. Finally, as she did for the previous two sets, Glancy buried the final kill taking the set 25-20, and the match 3-0.
Coach Jilliane Goulet was impressed with her team's performance, saying. "CBU did a good job at pushing back today, they definitely gave us a match, they pushed us to play better and you could see that in the end result."
Glancy led the V-Reds with a game-high 12 kills. Jacqueline Sebetovsky and Celina Abba had seven kills each. Vanja Mitrovic recorded six aces and added six kills while Paige Nelmes added a game-high 20 digs for UNB.
For the Capers, Ferguson had a team-high eight kills and three aces. Cassie MacDonald Chantelle Zawila added seven and five kills respectively. Zawila also recorded 13 digs in the loss.
The next action for the Varsity Reds will be after the Christmas break on Sunday, January 12th, where they will play host to the Université de Moncton Aigles Bleues, at the Richard J. Currie Centre.
The Capers will play again Sunday afternoon as face the Aigles Bleus at 2:00pm in Moncton.
