Top-seeded Huskies advance to final with 68-59 win over Sea-Hawks
(FREDERICTON, N.B.) - In the first semifinal of the 2013 Subway AUS women’s basketball championship, the top-seeded and CIS No. 4-ranked Saint Mary’s Huskies defeated the fifth-seeded Memorial Sea-Hawks with by a final score of 68-59.
(FREDERICTON, N.B.) - In the first semifinal of the 2013 Subway AUS women's basketball championship, the top-seeded and CIS No. 4-ranked Saint Mary's Huskies defeated the fifth-seeded Memorial Sea-Hawks with by a final score of 68-59.
The Huskies will now advance to Sunday's final at 2:00pm to play the winner of the second semifinal between the host UNB Varsity Reds and the second-seeded StFX X-Women.
At the end of the first quarter, Saint Mary's led 18-14 thanks to the play of AUS MVP Justine Colley with eight points and two rebounds. Memorial was led by AUS all-star Grace Fishbein, who put up six points and brought down four rebounds while Kim Devison supplied the shooting touch, adding eight points.
The second quarter saw Memorial's struggles from the field continue as Saint Mary's was able to stretch their lead to 36-26.
Memorial did their best to contain Justine Colley but she continued to find open teammates who made big shots at key times. Leading scorers for the Huskies at the half were Colley with 14 and Naomi Frequiere with nine. Memorial was led by Grace Fishbein and Kim Devison who scored eight a piece.
After three, the Huskies added even more separation leading 54-37 going into the fourth. Saint Mary's got hot from the outside early in the quarter with three-point baskets from Frequiere and AUS all-rookie guard Angelina Carvery. Devison and Fishbein continued to pace Memorial with 13 and 10 points respectively.
Memorial came to life in the 4th quarter finally connecting from the outside and getting the lead down to seven points, but it proved to be too little too late, as Frequiere supplied the dagger with a corner three with just over a minute left to get the lead back to 10.
Colley, named the Subway Player of the Game for Saint Mary's, had a game-high 23 points and grabbed eight rebounds in the win. She made 10-of-11 free throws and added three assists, four steals and three blocks.
Naomi Frequiere chipped in with 15, while Lindsay Panchan added 11 off the bench.
The Subway Player of the Game for Memorial was Kim Devison with 15points. Grace Fishbein added 18 and eight rebounds while Emily Jameson had 10.
