Sea-Hawks explode in fourth quarter to defeat Tigers 72-62
(FREDERICTON, N.B.) – In the opening quarter-final of the 2013 Subway AUS women's basketball championship, the fifth-seeded Memorial Sea-Hawks defeated the fourth-seeded Dalhousie Tigers by a score of 72-62 to advance to Saturday’s semifinals.
(FREDERICTON, N.B.) – In the opening quarter-final of the 2013 Subway AUS women's basketball championship, the fifth-seeded Memorial Sea-Hawks defeated the fourth-seeded Dalhousie Tigers by a score of 72-62 to advance to Saturday's semifinals.
The Sea-Hawks will now face the CIS No. 4-ranked Saint Mary's Huskies (18-2) in the 6:00pm game with a trip to Sunday's final on the line.
Memorial led by a 19-13 margin after the first quarter, but trailed 28-25 at the half.
After narrowing the gap to 45-43 after the third frame, the Sea-Hawks dominated the fourth quarter, outscoring the Tigers 29-17 to win by 10 points.
The Subway player of the game for the Sea-Hawks was fifth-year forward Grace Fishbein (Waterloo, Ont.) who netted a game-high 26 points and grabbed five rebounds.
Senior Post and AUS defensive player of the year Ally Forsey (St. John's, Nfld.) led the game in rebounds, with 15 for the Sea-Hawks while all-rookie team member Sandra Amoah (Toronto, Ont.) chipped in with a double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds.
The Subway player of the game from Dalhousie was Tessa Stammberger, a second-year forward from Kensington, P.E.I. Stammberger scored 21 points and added 13 rebounds in a losing cause.
For the Tigers, fourth-year forward Anna Von Maltzahn (Halifax, N.S.) chipped in with 10 boards while first team AUS all-star Keisha Brown (Halifax, N.S.) added 19 points.
The tournament continues with Friday's second quarter-final as the host UNB Varsity Reds take on the third-seeded Acadia Axewomen at 8:00pm.
