Men’s soccer quarterfinal #2: Memorial shuts out X-Men 2-1 to advance to semifinals vs. UNB
(ST. JOHN’S, NFLD.) - The sixth-ranked Memorial Sea-Hawks defeated the third-place X-Men 2-1 in the second quarterfinal match of the Subway AUS men's soccer championship Friday evening at King George V Park.

In the 13th minute, third-year defender Serge Dossou (Calgary, Alta.) opened the scoring and put the X-Men on the board with an unassisted goal.
Seventeen minutes into the game, Sea-Hawks forward Jordi Slaney (St. Lawrence, Nfld.) scampered up the right side of the field and set the ball up for second-year defenceman Ben Collingwood (St. John's, Nfld.) who came close but couldn't get past keeper Thomas Pieroway (Conception Bay, Nfld.).
Sea-Hawks captain Matthew Hamlyn (St. John's, Nfld.) took a free shot in front of the net that was intercepted by StFX defence in the 40th minute.
In the last minute of the half, rookie Natneal Tecle (Calgary, Alta.) of StFX tried to put one in the back of Memorial's net but was shut down but keeper Andrew Anson (Ottawa, Ont.)
At the half the X-Men led 1-0 and had a total of four shots. The Sea-Hawks had five shots in the first half.
Sea-Hawks rookie Kyle Williams (Goulds, Nfld.) came close to tying it up when he had a breakaway in the 53rd minute. The attempt was stopped by Pieroway but a determined Williams came back two minutes later and put Memorial on the board in the 55th minute.
When the clock hit 69 minutes, the X-Men took advantage of a Memorial miscue and there were two attempts on the Sea-Hawks' net by Tecle and Kallen Heenan (Halifax, N.S.).
It was the host Sea-Hawks that sealed their ticket to the semifinals in the 80th minute when Williams weaved his way up the sideline, past the StFX defence and set up forward Aaron Anstey, giving the Sea-Hawks a 2-1 victory.
The Subway player of the game for the winners was forward Aaron Anstey. Player of the game honours were awarded to Serge Dossou for StFX.
The Sea-Hawks will now face the top-ranked UNB Varsity Reds 2 p.m. Saturday in the championship semifinals.
