Varsity-Reds shut out Huskies 3-0 to win Subway AUS men’s soccer championship

(HALIFAX, N.S.) - The CIS No. 5-ranked UNB Varsity-Reds are the winners of the 2013 Subway AUS men's soccer championship after their 3-0 win over the Saint Mary's Huskies at Huskies Stadium on Sunday.

This is the first time since 2006 that UNB has taken home the AUS championship banner.

The V-Reds were led by Yousuf Mohammad (Toronto, Ont.), who scored two of the three UNB goals to earn Subway Player of the Game honours, and defender Yassin Shehab El Din (Cairo, Egypt) who was named most valuable player of the championship.

The V-Reds set the pace early with a great scoring opportunity from Mohammad in the first minute of the game that was turned aside by Huskies keeper Adam Miller (Swindon, England).

Mohammad capitalized on his next opportunity in the 18^th minute as he chipped the ball over Miller and watched it slowly roll in as Huskies defender Shawn Kodejs (Halifax, N.S.) was unable to get to it in time.

As they did in the first, the V-Reds opened the second half with a goal. This time, it came off a corner kick from AUS rookie of the year Diego Padhilha (São Paulo, Brazil) and found the foot of defender El Din who scored his second goal of the tournament to give the UNB a two-goal lead.

Mohammad then scored his second goal of the day in the 77^th minute to seal the Huskies' fate.

The V-Reds were relentless throughout, allowing the Huskies minimal quality scoring opportunities. UNB's back line worked effectively together to stop the speedy Huskies striker Robert Rawlings (Hamilton, Bermuda) from breaking through and finding the back of the net.

V-Reds keeper Brandon Eagle (Edmonton, Alta.) recorded the shutout, only having to make four saves on the day.

Both the Varsity Reds and the Huskies advance to compete in the CIS men's soccer championship being hosted by UNB Nov. 7-10 in Fredericton, N.B.
