(MONCTON, N.B.) - The Université de Moncton Aigles Bleus (9-13-2) scored twice in the third period to break a deadlock and defeat the UPEI Panthers (10-12-2), 4-2 Wednesday evening in a game played in front of over 500 spectators at the J.-Louis-Lévesque Arena.
The Aigles Bleus will play their last two regular season home games on Friday and Saturday against the Dalhousie University Tigers and Acadia University Axemen respectively, both games are scheduled for 7 p.m. at the J. Louis-Lévesque Arena.
UPEI's Reginaldo Traccitto opened the scoring at 3:12 of the first period off an assist from Mason Wilgosh.
The Aigles' Danny Chiasson (from Pier-Antoine Dion and Alex Noel) tied things up at 9:35. Less than four minutes later Samuel Groulx netted Moncton's second goal, on the power play, and the Aigles took a 2-1 lead to end the first period. Remi Blanchard and Noel were credited with the assists.
On a Panthers' power play in the second, UPEI's Tyler Brown tied things up with assists coming from Chris Desousa and Marcus Power. It was the only scoring in the second frame.
Victor Beaulac (from Pierre Durepos and Allain Saulnier) scored the game-winner on the power play in the third for Moncton. Forward Pier-Antoine Dion (from Groulx and Jean-François Plant) added an insurance goal at 7:56 of the final frame to secure the Aigle's 4-2 victory.
It was Moncton's second win in a row, a rare feat since the first semester. Brandon Thibeau faced 30 shots (13 in the second) for the victory while Mavric Parks faced 32 shots in the loss for the Panthers, half of which came in the first period.
"We played well in Charlottetown even if we lost the last game," said Moncton head coach Serge Bourgeois. "The difference tonight is the puck bounced for us, we played with more confidence and we scored. We can still claim fifth position, being two points behind the Panthers. It does not matter to me whether it is 5th or 6th, as long as we can finish the season healthy and that we play well."
"The puck was rolling well for me tonight," added Subway player of the game Samuel Groulx. "The two wins in a row are well appreciated. We lost a number of games by a few goals, but now we need to qualify for the playoffs and gain momentum. We are aiming on qualifying and once that is done, we will think of the playoffs."
