(FREDERICTON, N.B.) - The St. Thomas Tommies men's hockey team fell 5-1 to the St. Francis Xavier X-Men on Saturday night in front of 628 spectators at the Grant-Harvey Centre.
The loss brings St. Thomas to 0-3-2 on the season and seventh in the Atlantic University Conference standings.
StFX took an early lead, with Ted Stephans converting a one timer off of good forecheck pressure.
Just 32 seconds later, Steven Kuhn broke in on a 2-on-1 and made no mistake, finishing high to give St. Francis Xavier a two-goal lead only five minutes into the game. The Tommies were outshot 16-11 in the period.
At the end of the first, the X-Men took a bench minor, giving St. Thomas their only power play of the game to start the second. Colin Martin scored five-hole on a breakaway to pull the Tommies within one.
Special teams did not play into the game outside of Martin's goal, as each team was disciplined on the night taking only one minor penalty each.
The X-Men responded with Bronson Maschmeyer scoring off a great individual effort. The period ended with St. Thomas down 3-1.
St. Thomas attempted a comeback in the third, but they could not beat X-Men netminder Drew Owsley. The Tommies played most of the third in the X-Men's zone, but lapsed late, giving up two goals in the final five minutes.
The insurance goals were scored by StFX's Robert Slaney and Cole Grbavac. Slaney was named Subway first star of the game for his efforts in the X-Men win. StFX's Ted Stephens was named the second star and St. Thomas's Rankyn Campbell, the third.
