Huskies blank V-Reds 3-0 to clinch playoff berth

(HALIFAX, NS) - The Saint Mary's Huskies improved to 6-6 after defeating the UNB Varsity Reds 3-0 Saturday afternoon in AUS women's volleyball action at the Homburg Centre in Halifax.

Subway Player of the Game Jane Pegg (4^th year, Weyburn, Sask.) registered thirty-four assists, five digs, and two aces to lead the Huskies to their sixth consecutive victory and a berth in the 2013 Subway AUS women's volleyball championship hosted by Memorial University next month.

Ariel Smith (5^th year, Yarmouth, N.S.) added twelve kills and twelve digs while Shelby Michaels  (2^nd year, Mill Bay, B.C.) had ten kills for the Huskies.

Smith currently leads the conference in kills per game (3.73) and points per game (4.1), while Pegg is averaging an AUS-leading 9.00 assists per set.

With the victory, SMU moved into third place in the standings, trailing second place Moncton by only two points.

Vanja Mitrovic (2^nd year, Fredericton, N.B.) had six kills and seven digs to lead the Varsity Reds (4-9) while Celina Abba (3^rd year, Fredericton, N.B.) tallied five aces from the service line.

The Huskies next home game will be Friday, February 8^th when the Université de Moncton Aigles Bleues visit the Homburg Centre in a battle of two teams battling for a first round.

Game time is 7:00 and the match can be seen the game live via webcast at Huskies TV.
