(WOLFVILLE, N.S.) - Facing adversity in the closing minutes of today's matchup against StFX, the Axewomen pulled off a 2-1 victory by netting two goals in the remaining minutes.
A tight game during the first half, the X-Women took control of the opening minutes of the second half and at the 53 minute mark, Kevyn Timmons gave StFX a lead that would last for most of the match. The Axewomen found themselves back on their heels trying to find a way to get back in the game.
At the 89th minute mark, Jenna Blackburn got in behind the defence to find herself alone with StFX's keeper and slipped the ball square across the six-yard box to find the foot of Meghan Earle and eventually the back of the net to tie the game at one.
The Axewomen continued to push and less than a minute later, a long ball by Katie Ross floated over the heads of the StFX defenders and once again found Meghan Earle's hot foot to put the Axewomen up 2-1.
The win over StFX and an early weekend win against Moncton awarded the Axewomen six crucial point in the AUS standings.
Head coach Amit Batra was thrilled with the win. "We have been on the other side of that type of game in the past. It was a difficult contest and players were asked to step way out of their comfort zone and find a way," she said. "It was another total team effort and an exciting win. A character win."
AUS Subway Player of the Game was Meghan Earle, who remains second in the AUS goal scoring race with seven, trailing Cape Breton's Karolyne Blain. The Acadia Axewomen are tied for second place heading into the last weekend of play at Dalhousie on Friday and returning home against the UPEI Panthers on Saturday afernoon.
