(FREDERICTON, N.B.) - The UNB Varsity Reds women's soccer team didn't let their first game of the weekend dictate how their second game would go. They were able to claim a 4-2 victory over the Panthers Sunday.
Forward Brianna Ford scored two of the four goals in today's game. Her first came early in the game. She scored the second after beating the defender. The goalie had come out, giving her the opportunity to push the ball into the net.
"I tried to chip her, and then she got a piece of it and I just headed it into the net," said Ford.
"She can influence a play all over the field," said head coach Jon Crossland of Ford. "Like I always tell her, she's the first line of defence. When she puts pressure on people she can help us win the ball, and she gets in good gaps."
The other two goals of the game were scored by Meggie Spicer, her second of the weekend, and Paige Vincent.
"Some days we just really come out on Sundays, and it's fantastic," said Spicer. "Everyone was tired from the game yesterday. And this is a really important game, we needed the three points."
Mathematically the women still have a chance to make the AUS playoffs. With the three points added, they now sit seventh in the standings, just two spots out of playoff position.
Spicer was also named Subway Player of the Game in the match.
"[I'm] really happy," she said. "I don't think I played as well as yesterday, to be honest, but I wasn't disappointed with how I played and I think it was more of a team effort. Everyone showed up 100 per cent today."
Crossland said he is happy with the results of the game, and is pleased to take the three points and looks forward to their final two regular season games.
They travel this coming weekend to play the Saint Mary's Huskies and then the Dalhousie Tigers in Halifax.
