Axewomen Stay Unbeaten with 28–14 Win Over UPEI
The Acadia Axewomen moved to 2–0 on the AUS women’s rugby season with a 28–14 road victory over the UPEI Panthers on Saturday.
(Charlottetown, PEI) - The Acadia Axewomen moved to 2–0 on the AUS women's rugby season with a 28–14 road victory over the UPEI Panthers on Saturday.
Fifth-year forward Brielynn Murrant led the charge with two tries, while Sarah Gunn was perfect from the kicking tee, going 4-for-4 on conversions.
Acadia wasted no time getting on the board. Murrant powered over for the opening try in the fifth minute, converted by Gunn for a 7–0 lead.
Minutes later, the Axewomen struck again off a clean lineout as Juliette Matsukubo sprinted down the sideline for a 30-yard try to double the lead to 14–0.
UPEI responded in the 20th minute when Rowan Gallagher touched down off a pass from Jorja Cook, and Lauren Misener converted to make it 14–7.
Murrant's second try of the day in the 24th minute restored Acadia's control and sent them into halftime up 21–7.
The Panthers kept things close in the second half, with Gallagher scoring her second try in the 55th minute. Misener's second conversion cut the margin to 21–14, but the Axewomen defence locked down the rest of the way.
In stoppage time, Jenna Gallant broke through for a late try, and Gunn's fourth conversion sealed the win.
Acadia, the defending AUS champions, will look to stay perfect when they host St. Francis Xavier in their home opener on Friday, Sept. 19 at Raymond Field. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
