Tommies top Aigles Bleues 4-3 in Game 1 of Subway AUS Women's Hockey semifinals
(MONCTON, N.B.) - The St. Thomas University Tommies came back from a one-point deficit to score twice in the third period and win 4-3 over the Université de Moncton Aigles Bleues in Game 1 of the best-of-three Subway AUS Women's Hockey semifinals Thursday evening at the J.-Louis-Lévesque Arena.
(MONCTON, N.B.) - The St. Thomas University Tommies came back from a one-point deficit to score twice in the third period and win 4-3 over the Université de Moncton Aigles Bleues in Game 1 of the best-of-three Subway AUS Women's Hockey semifinals Thursday evening at the J.-Louis-Lévesque Arena.
The second game will be played on Saturday evening, at 7 p.m. at the Grant-Harvey Centre, in Fredericton.
Danielle Ring, at 8:03 and Kelty Apperson, with her second of the evening at 12:24 were the scorers in the third for the victory.
The Tommies took a 35-32 lead on shots.
Emily Olesuk had the other Tommies goal in the middle stanza.
Jodie Dupéré (from Roxanne Turcotte and Katherine Dubuc), at 0:38 seconds of the first period, and Katryne Villeneuve (from Kaitlyn Gallaway and Jennifer Arsenault), at 18:48 gave the Aigles Bleues a 2-1 lead in the first.
Dupéré (from Marie-Pier Arsenault) scored her second of the game to make it 3-2 for the home team after two periods.
Gabrielle Forget faced 35 shots in the loss for Moncton while Taylor Cook faced 32 for the Tommies in the win.
"We wanted this first game, but they were able to profit from our errors to win it,'' said Moncton head coach Denis Ross. "We will have to forget this game and think of Saturday, now. We will practice Friday to look at our play and get ready for Game 2. This is not the first time that we've faced this situation. We will have to create more scoring chances."
Game 2 of the best-of-three series is set for 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 27 at the Grant Harvey Centre in Fredericton, N.B.
