Tigers post 3-2 victory over Tommies in Game 2 of Subway AUS women's hockey quarter-final playoff series
(HALIFAX, N.S.) - The Dalhousie Tigers and St. Thomas Tommies matched up in the second game of the Subway AUS women's hockey quarter-final playoff series Thursday night at the Halifax Forum.
(HALIFAX, N.S.) - The Dalhousie Tigers and St. Thomas Tommies matched up in the second game of the Subway AUS women's hockey quarter-final playoff series Thursday night at the Halifax Forum.
The Tommies took the first game of the series 7-3 on Tuesday, Feb. 17, leaving the Tigers to claw back and win in order to continue the series. Although they were outshot 41-26 by the Tommies, the Tigers won by a score of 3-2.
Jessica Severeyns lead the Tigers to the win as she came up huge with an outstanding 39 saves. Paige Macdonald assisted both of the Tommies goals this evening.
The Tigers came firing into the first period with four shots on Tommies goaltender Abby Clarke in the first five minutes.
With the Tigers' next scoring opportunity at the 5:33 mark, Jesse Rietveld was able to find the back of the net, giving Dalhousie an early 1-0 lead.
Soon after, the Tigers took two penalties, giving the Tommies a two-person advantage. With strong goaltending and defending, the Tigers were able to hold onto their lead.
The Tommies picked up the pace near the end of the period, out shooting the Tigers 7-1 in the final five minutes with Lauren Henman and Myfanwy Thomson making good on two chances to take a 2-1 lead heading into the second.
Just over six minutes into the second period, defender Morgan Kidney notched a goal for the Tigers, tying up the score 2-2.
The play continued back and forth with shots from both sides for the rest of the period, but neither team was able to take the lead before entering the final period.
In the third, the Tommies came out hot offensively, outshooting the Tigers 18-5. It was Dalhousie however, who took the lead with an unassisted goal by Elizabeth Macarthur at the 10:15 mark.
In a last effort to take the game to overtime, the Tommies pulled their goaltender with 53 seconds left but it woulnd't be enough.
The Tigers took the victory 3-2 sending the series to a third and final game.
The Tigers and the Tommies will face off at St. Thomas on Saturday, Feb. 21 at 7 p.m. The winner will advance to the Subway AUS women's hockey semi-final playoff series.
