(WOLFVILLE, N.S.) - Coming off a win last weekend against UNB, the Axewomen were looking to gain some momentum as they faced off against StFX, who were on a five-game slide.
Acadia overcame an 18-point deficit to bring the game to within four at the half, but costly turnovers and strong three-point shooting from StFX saw the Axewoman drop to 2-5 on a 74-61 loss to the Axewomen.
The X-Women were hot from the start, opening up with an early 9-2 lead on 80 per cent shooting from the field. Acadia's player of the game, Abbey Duinker was the only bright spot in the first quarter for the Axewomen, scoring 10 points in 10 minutes of play. StFX led 29-16 at the end of the first.
StFX stretched the lead to 18 points in the second frame. First-year guard Katie Ross scored eight consecutive points initiating a 14-5 run in favour of the Axewomen to close out the half.
Ross played a game-high 38 minutes and finished with 13 points and also contributed seven rebounds, three assists and four steals. Acadia entered the second half down 39-32, with the run capped off by an offensive rebound and buzzer-beating put back by Tamara Dondi.
Dondi continued her strong play at the start of the third, increasing the run to 22-7, and Acadia only trailed by three midway through the third but the X-Women once again found their shooting stroke.
Pulling away on the play of Subway Player of the Game Vanessa Pickard, who netted nine of her 18 points in the last 15 minutes of the game, StFX defeated Acadia 74-61.
In the win StFX had four starters scoring in double digits including Pickard who had 18 points, two rebounds and two assists in the win. Rebecca Sheehan and Lindsay Lessard both added 16 points and Lia St. Pierre posted 14 points and eight rebounds.
StFX will face UPEI at home on Nov. 30 to wrap up before the winter break while Acadia will open up the new year facing Memorial on back-to-back nights at home Jan. 11 and 12.
