Sea-Hawks defeat X-Women 80-75 to earn weekend split
(ANTIGONISH, N.S.) - The Memorial Sea-Hawks women’s basketball team held on for a narrow 80-75 road win over the StFX X-Women Sunday afternoon at the Oland Centre in Antigonish.
(ANTIGONISH, N.S.) - The Memorial Sea-Hawks women's basketball team held on for a narrow 80-75 road win over the StFX X-Women Sunday afternoon at the Oland Centre in Antigonish.
The game was a tightly played affair, but Memorial's defence was the difference in the fourth quarter as the visitors earned a weekend split with StFX after dropping the Saturday evening contest to the home squad 84-78.
The Sea-Hawks led 19-15 after the first quarter and at the half the score was 39-38 for the host X-Women. StFX extended their lead to two points after the third quarter, but the Sea-Hawks outscored the hosts 28-21 in the final 10 minutes to secure the win.
Grace Fishbein was the Subway player of the game for Memorial with 19 points and six rebounds. Sandra Amoah added a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds, while Emily Jameson netted 11.
Megan Robinson was also a sparkplug for the Sea-Hawks with 10 points and 4 rebounds off the bench. Robinson had two three-pointers and did a good job handling the StFX pressure late in the game.
Lia St. Pierre had a game-high 20 points and added six rebounds for the X-Women, while Kolbi Roper and Rebecca Sheehan had 15 and 14 respectively.
Memorial improved to 6-8 with the win and are now in fifth place in the AUS standings with 16 points. The X-Women drop to 7-6 and are tied for second place with the Acadia Axewomen with 26 points each.
The Sea-Hawks will host the Axewomen for a pair of games next weekend while the X-Women will next see action when they host the UPEI Panthers on February 2ndd at 6:00pm.
