Huskies score four unanswered to beat the Panthers

(HALIFAX, N.S.) - The Saint Mary's Huskies (3-5) defeated the UPEI Panthers (4-2-1) by a score of 4-2 on the heels of a second period offensive flurry. Saint Mary's netminder Anthony Terenzio made 27 saves to pick up the win in his first-ever university start.

The Panthers struck first just three minutes into the game. It was Jordan Mayer who picked up his team-leading fourth goal of the season when he forced a turnover in the Huskies' end and roofed a shot over the shoulder of Terenzio.

Minutes later Stephen Johnston had the puck stolen from him and took an offensive zone hooking penalty. On the ensuing power play, Matthew Brenton finished off a beautiful tic-tac-toe passing play. Alex Wall and Travis McIsaac were credited with the assists.

Eight minutes into the second frame, Saint Mary's defenceman Jamie Doornbosch halved the Panthers' lead when he ripped a point shot through traffic past Mavric Parks. Huskies forward Cory Tanaka tied the game less than a minute later when he sniped a wrist shot over the glove hand of Parks.

The Huskies took the lead when Steven Shipley one-timed a soft pass from linemate Matt Tipoff over the glove of Parks. Saint Mary's managed to score an insurance goal before the end of the second period.

The fourth goal was scored on a play started by Bradley Greene who was able to chip the puck past a Panthers defender causing an odd-man rush. Again, it was Jamie Doornbosch scoring for his team when he jumped up in the play and slapped home a feed from Greene.

The final 20 minutes yielded no scoring as Anthony Terenzio was able to stop all 15 shots in the third period.

The Huskies are back in action Saturday night at the Halifax Forum. They will host the St. Thomas Tommies at 7 p.m.
