St. Thomas University is beginning the search for a men's varsity hockey head coach following the resignation of Troy Ryan.
Ryan, who was named head coach in May 2011, has left the program. In the near term, Ryan has agreed to assist on transition issues related to recruiting and the operation of the hockey schools.
"On behalf of the university and our Athletics Department, I want to thank Troy for his work in helping to progress our men's hockey program," said Eagles.
"Over the past two years, he made strides in the right direction and helped to put in place elements that we can build on going forward. He has a bright future in the game and I want to wish him the best in his future endeavours."
The search for the new head coach will be led by Eagles and Vice President Finance and Administration Lily Fraser, the executive responsible for athletics operations at the university. The search will be built on the work done in the previous national search conducted in 2011.
Eagles said at that time the search committee had identified a strong pool of qualified coaches and had conducted interviews with many of them. The starting point will be to revisit that list and use it as the basis for identifying potential candidates for the position.
"We will be looking for the same skill set — demonstrated leadership skills, experience, and success in coaching hockey at a high-performance level and the ability to recruit players. Our expectation is that the new head coach can move our program forward in a very competitive league," he added.
Over the past two years, the university has added additional resources and other requirements to support a successful men's hockey program. This includes the opening of the new Grant-Harvey Centre as a home arena and the construction of dedicated space for the men's and women's hockey teams in the new facility, developing new revenue streams through promotions tied to the new facility and enhancing the sports information services.
