Panthers hand Axemen 94-84 loss in final game of regular season

(WOLFVILLE, N.S.) - Tyler Scott (Halifax, N.S.) was a thorn in the side of the Axemen in today's rescheduled UPEI at Acadia basketball game. The first-year Panther, who once played for Acadia, had a game high 33 points, 25 points in the first half.

(WOLFVILLE, N.S.) - Tyler Scott (Halifax, N.S.) was a thorn in the side of the Axemen in today's rescheduled UPEI at Acadia basketball game. The first-year Panther, who once played for Acadia, had a game high 33 points, 25 points in the first half.

UPEI led for just under 32 minutes until rookie Ben Miller's (Winnipeg, Man.) three point shot at 8:34 gave the Axemen a 70-68 lead that would be erased quickly by UPEI veteran guard Ellis Ffrench's (Wolfville, N.S.) three point shot that regained the lead.

Acadia tied the game at 75 with just over five minutes remaining in the final frame, but once again Ffrench would push the Panthers ahead, this time for good as the UPEI handed Acadia a 94-84 loss.

The Panthers dominated the post area, scoring 28 points compared to Acadia's 14 in the paint. The largest Panthers lead came in the closing minutes of the game, when UPEI pushed to a 12-point advantage. Prior to that, the Panthers stretched out to a nine-point lead during the closing minutes of the third frame.

UPEI's Ellis Ffrench added 21 points to Subway Player of the Game Tyler Scott's 33 points and 11 rebounds. Geoff Doane (St. Margaret's Bay, N.S.) added 11 points and 15 rebounds, while teammate Lorenzo Parker (New Minas, N.S.) had 14 points and eight rebounds.

Senior forward and Acadia Subway Player of the Game, Shaquille Smith (North Preston, N.S.), netted 18 points and pulled down six rebounds. Big man Rhys Larry (Maitland, Ont.) scored only eight points, but posted a game-high 17 rebounds, including 11 on the defensive end.
Ben Miller and Gianmarco Luciani (Maple, Ont.) added 17 and 15 points respectively.

The Panthers finish the season with a 15-5 second-place record in the final AUS standings, while the Axemen will miss the AUS championship weekend for the first time since the 2005-06 season with a 5-15 record.
