Sea-Hawks outlast X-Men to extend three-game win streak

(ST. JOHN'S, N.L.) - The Memorial men's basketball team claimed their first weekend sweep of the season with a 76-70 victory over the StFX X-Men at the Field House on Sunday afternoon.

It was the Sea-Hawks that were on the board first, making a 6-0 run in the first minute of play. However, the X-Men were quick to catch up and when the opening quarter came to a close the home team was up by only one point, 18-17 over the visitors.

In the second quarter Memorial began to pull away from StFX, out-shooting the them 28-13. The X-Men began to find themselves in foul trouble and Memorial was solid from the free-throw line, making eight of 10 attempts. Going into the half the Sea-Hawks led 46-30.

The second half saw the X-Men come back strong. In the third quarter StFX out-shot Memorial by 11 points and finished only five points behind the Sea-Hawks who led 56-51.

The last quarter was tightly contested between the two teams. Fourth-year Sea-Hawk Caleb Gould (Aurora, Ont.) led the quarter with eight points, all of which were from the field. As a result, Memorial out-shot StFX by only one point, but it was enough to solidify their lead and take the game by six points.

Gould had a game-high 26 points and 11 rebounds leading the Sea-Hawks. The Subway player of the game Vasilije Curcic (Kragujevac, Serbia) had 13 points and as many rebounds in the win while contributing five assists.

Davonte Provo (East Preston, N.S.) led the X-Men with 15, and teammate Cameron Walker (Dallas, Texas) provided 14 of his own and 11 rebounds.

The Sea-Hawks improve to 5-9 on the season while StFX falls to 4-11 with the loss. Memorial moves into the final playoff position in the AUS after sweeping two four-point games.

Memorial will be off to Halifax next weekend for games against the Saint Mary's Huskies on Feb. 7 and 8. The X-Men play next when they host the Huskies for a two-point game on Feb. 4.
