The
return of Donnie Moss has been a huge boost with the loss of
Jermaine Duke to graduation. Moss is hard to contain on the
offensive boards, range beyond the arc, and athleticism and length
gives him defensive versatility.
Geoff
Doane has been a steady presence although Coach Kendrick would
probably like to see higher rebounding numbers. Brian Ofori
continues to be a solid contributor off the bench.

|
Reigning AUS rookie
of the year Deontay Smith continues to develop and leads the
Panthers in scoring. His shooting percentages are low especially
from three but he may be the best rebounding guard in the AUS and
is a floor general.
Veteran Ellis Ffrench
has proven to be an outstanding addition and the Panthers have
significant depth with Joe Kendrick, Will Caesar, and Lorenzo
Parker all contributing.
|
| Defence |
|
Statistically, the
Panthers are the worst defensive team in the AUS allowing over 90
ppg and opponents averaging a staggering 45 percent shooting from
the floor.
Defensive rebounding
has been a major problem however they partially make up for it with
steals with blocks. The Panthers can win games in the nineties but
they’ll have to pick it up on the defensive end come
March.
|
| Bench |
|
Maybe
the deepest team Coach Kendrick has had in his three seasons at
UPEI. Outstanding depth at guard position and role players in the
frontcourt that allows the Panthers to use a variety of different
looks.
Lorenzo Parker has
provided an offensive spark averaging nine ppg and shooting at a
high percentage.

Other Comments: The Panthers played the full
roster early on but after tightening their line-up, they finished
the fall term with three wins and a double overtime loss at
StFX.
The Panthers up tempo style is a lot of fun to watch but they
will need to improve their outside shooting and defensive
rebounding if they want to pick up wins in March at the Halifax
Metro Centre. - Bill McLean, Inside the AUS and AUStv.

Coaches Comments: We certainly got off to a
rough start with two very close losses at home to Acadia followed
by two on the road at UNB. We don't feel like we have played up to
our potential. We did close the first half on a 3-1 run, and
certainly feel like we are making progress.
We struggled to re-integrate Donny Moss and Will Caesar back in
to the line-up, after both missed all of last season and this
pre-season due to injury.
We hope to build on the momentum we have created over our past
four games and come out of the gate strong to start the second
half!
The AUS is such a strong league... every team is capable of
beating each other, and the battle for a play-off spot is going to
be a war. - Tim Kendrick, Head Coach

| Panthers Notes: Sophomore guard
Deontay Smith is currently sixth in AUS scoring, averaging a
team-high 16.0 points per game. Smith, the reigning CIS rookie of
the year, had two 30-plus point games in the first
semester...Fourth-year senior Aaron Robbins second in the Atlantic
conference in steals with 2.25 per game...Robbins is the only UPEI
player to record a double-double this season (11/29/13 - 10 points
and 10 rebounds at Cape Breton)...The last time the Panthers missed
the AUS post-season was in 2011-12 when they finished in seventh
place with a 7-13 record...UPEI’s last playoff win was in
2009 (AUS quarter-final - 79-70 win over Saint Mary’s). |
|
| From the record books: Curtis
Robinson holds the AUS and UPEI record for regular season career
points scored with 2,069 points in 100 games played over his
five-year career from 1991-92 to 1995-96...The school’s
current active leader in career points scored is fourth-year
forward Geoff Doane with 640 points in 67 career regular season
games played...Robinson also holds the UPEI records for points
scored in a single season (522 points – 1995-96) and points
scored in a single game (54 – 11/19/94 vs. StFX)...Scott
Morrison is the Atlantic conference record holder for three-point
field goals made with 220. Morrison played in 99 regular season
games from 1995-96 to 1999-00...Robinson, Peter Gordon and Sherone
Edwards are the only UPEI players to be named the AUS player of the
year. Gordon is the only player to have won the Atlantic
conference’s top award three times (1988-89, 1989-90 and
1990-91). |
