They've had good
balance between shooting and driving, but much of the scoring still
comes from the outside the key, making them slightly vulnerable
down low.
Forward Ryan Smith is
hauling in a third of his rebounds per game while on
offence.
|
| Backcourt |
|
Javon
Masters has taken over the V-Reds backcourt, and is owning it. The
rookie Masters leads the country in scoring with 32 PPG, and
between veterans Dan Quirion and the now-healthy Will McPhee,
there's lots of scoring ability among the guards.
Too
bad there's only one basketball.
|
| Defence |
|
It's a
generous "plus" because they're giving up 83 points per game (7th
highest in the CIS). But where they struggle on defence, they make
up on offence and ultimately step up their game to win.
Plus,
they're controlling the boards better than most in the
country.

Last
season, the V-Reds struggled through an injury bug which arguably
ruined their season.
New
recruits solved that problem, and are guys who can step in without
the team missing a beat. Depth is showing its value this
season.

Other Comments: If there's an award for
national recruiter of the year, it would go to UNB head coach Brent
Baker.
Aside from recruiting Javon Masters who could very well be the
top scorer in Canada by season's end, Baker vowed not to go through
the injury bug which plagued his team last season. Mission
accomplished. Baker recruited for numbers and found "hybrid" guys,
if you will, who can fill any role and keep the winning train on
track.
UNB's success this year is as much a credit to its newfound
depth as it is to the veterans who paved the way. - Nick

Coaches Comments: Our squad has enjoyed some
early success during the first semester. Being first in the
conference and ranked ninth in the nation Is a significant
improvement on last year's performance.
In my six years as a coach I've never seen the league with so
much parity. Anybody can beat anybody on any given night, so for us
to get six wins this early makes us feel very fortunate to be where
we are. None of our wins were a walk in the park and we expect it
to be even tougher in the second half of the season.
We have been very fortunate with addition of Javon Masters who
is playing with a maturity beyond his years. He has an ability to
dominate play at the offensive end without dominating the ball and
has been special to watch. He's one of he most efficient players
I've ever coached.
Dan Quirion has rebounded from two injury plagued seasons with a
great first half. The team is looking forward to the return of the
Will McFee who was a first team AUS all-star and the conference's
scoring leader from last season. He has been sidelined with a
hamstring injury for first six games of the season but returned for
our final game vs. Saint Marys and tallied 11points.
Lastly, our attendance at our home games has increased
significantly. It's great to see the student body adding a great
deal of atmosphere at our home games this season. - Brent
Baker, Head Coach
