|
Injuries have been a
factor here. Klassen has been dominant when able to play. As it
turns out, Lauchlan Gale’s return for a fifth year has been
huge. The return of a healthy Rhys Larry after Christmas will help.
Second-year man Kyle Arseneault has been impressive so
far. |

|
A.J. Simmonds
continues to improve at the point. Sean Stoqua (football / injury)
should return to the lineup after Christmas to add stability.
Anthony Sears and Anthony Ashe both battled injuries in the first
half. When healthy, they are both impact players. |

|
Klassen has been the
AUS Defensive Player of the Year the past two seasons for good
reason. When the whole roster is available and healthy, this is a
team that can hold any opponent in the 70s if not the 60s, which in
turn drives the offense. |
| Bench |
|
A work in
progress, mostly due to injuries. Shaquille Smith, when he
isn’t starting, provides a spark and is the team’s most
improved player. The return of Larry after Christmas should help.
Brad States and Tyler Scott taking the year off affects the overall
depth. |

Other Comments: It’s hard to argue with a
5-2 record so far. This is a scary team when everyone is healthy;
unfortunately, that hasn’t been the case very much so far
this season. A lot of players have been playing hurt, which has
curtailed the overall effectiveness of the team.
Both the 573 points scored and the 572 points allowed could be
better, and would be better with a full, healthy roster.
The senior players have provided leadership both on and off the
court. Defensively, Acadia can do better in terms of covering the
ball and keeping it simple. The break comes at a good time for the
Axemen, in that it will allow some of the injured players to regain
their health.

| Coaches Comments: While we
were pleased to finish the first semester at 5-2, we feel we have a
lot of potential to improve. Some of our younger guys were asked to
play major roles during the semester due to veterans missing time.
They capitalized on their opportunities and have grown in
confidence.
Our experience on the road in the AUS with our younger guys will
pay dividends in the second semester and into playoffs.
Our focus coming into January will be to tighten up on the
defensive end. We gave up too many easy points in the first
semester. That, combined with unforced turnovers, and we have a lot
we can clean up. Our improvement on the defensive end will dictate
how our season goes come February.
We are looking forward to the return of Sean Stoqua and Rhys
Larry as well as improved health for Owen Klassen, Anthony Sears,

| Axemen Notes: Senior forward Owen
Klassen is averaging 23.8 points per game and 10.5 rebounds per
game in just four games played. He is the only player in the
conference averaging a double-double...Fifth-year senior Anthony
Ashe's six 3-pointers on November 13th vs. Dalhousie are the most
3FG's made in an AUS regular season game this year...Acadia is the
top-ranked free-throw shooting team in the conference, making 75.7
of their shots from the charity stripe...The last time the Axemen
missed the AUS championship tournament was in 2005-06 when they
finished with a 2-17 record...Acadia head coach Steve Baur picked
up his 50th career regular season win on November 28th with a 89-76
win over StFX...The Axemen have been to the CIS championship in
each of the past three seasons and have posted a 3-5 record on the
national stage. |

Axemen star Ted Upshaw holds the school record for career points
scored with 1,563 in 78 games played over his five-year career from
1976-77 to 1980-81...The current AUS and Acadia active leader in
career points scored is fifth-year forward Owen Klassen with 1,216
points in 77 career regular season games played...Fifth-year guard
Anthony Sears is the only other current AUS player with over 1,000
career points scored. Sears has netted 1,064 points in 72 career
games...Upshaw also holds the school record for points scored in a
single season with 524 in 1980-81...Brian Heaney holds the AUS
record for most points scored in a single game with 74 (Feb. 17,
1968 vs. Mount Allison). |
