SACKVILLE, N.B. — Quarterback Tyran Duval threw a pair of first-quarter touchdown passes and the Acadia Axemen held off a late Mount Allison push to earn a 20-11 win in AUS football action Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.
Duval finished 16-of-25 for 168 yards, connecting with Jase LeBlanc from 14 yards and Xander Matheson from 41 to give Acadia (1-2) a 14-0 lead in the opening quarter. Kicker Nick Swain added a rouge on the final play of the first half and hit an 18-yard field goal in the fourth quarter as part of a six-point outing.
Acadia's defence recorded six sacks, including 2.5 from linebacker Rory Litt, and limited Mount Allison to 242 total yards despite the Mounties dominating time of possession (37:13). The Axemen forced two safeties — one in each half — and snuffed out multiple promising drives with key stops behind the line of scrimmage.
Mount Allison (0-3) finally broke through late, when quarterback Xavier Uhr found James Laceby on a six-yard touchdown strike with 1:24 remaining, but the two-point conversion failed. Graeme Maither added a single on a missed field goal with 29 seconds left to round out the scoring.
Andrew Rees led Acadia with five catches for 83 yards, while Noah Potter carried 19 times for 76 yards. For Mount Allison, running back Owen Istace averaged 7.3 yards per carry on six attempts, and Jack Howell caught four passes for 64 yards and added 43 combined return yards.
