AUS Men's Hockey Weekly Round Up: Week 15

Thursday, Feb. 8

Saint Mary's 5 vs. Moncton 1 (Box Score)
(MONCTON, N.B.) The Université de Moncton Aigles Bleus gave up 54 shots on goal and three unanswered goals as the Saint Mary's University Huskies, were 5-1 winners on Thursday evening at the J.-Louis-Lévesque Arena, in an Atlantic University Sport men's hockey game. Thomas Stavert and Alex Cord, in the first period, Jake Coughler and Aaron Berisha, the last on the power play in the second and Anthony Repaci, in the third, got the markers for the visitors. Jean-François Plante (Marc-Anthony Therrien) scored the lone Blue and Gold goal, on a hard wrist shot in the first period. Moncton goaltender Brandon Thibeau, Subway player of the game, faced 54 shots during the game, 18, 17 and 19 per the three periods. He had a busy evening with numerous key saves.  Eric Brassard saw 31 shots for the winners, including 12 in the first period. Read more: Recap 


Friday, Feb. 9

Dalhousie 3 vs. UPEI 6 (Box Score)
(CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I.) The UPEI Panthers earned a home win over the 6-3 Dalhousie Tigers Friday evening, in which the Panthers took a 4-1 lead in the first period and never looked back. Goals for UPEI in the first came from Sam Aulie, Kameron Kielly (PP), Beau McCue (PP), and Riley Whittingham. A goal from Dalhousie's Alex Pawelczyk at the 2:34 mark of the second put the Tigers within two heading into the third. UPEI's Cody Payne added to the Panthers lead in the third, until a powerplay tally from Dalhousie's Myles McGurty at the 9:51 kepted the Tigers hopes alive. Despite Dalhousie's efforts, an empty-net goal from UPEI's Marcus Power sealed the deal for the Panthers as they held on for the 6-3 victory. Read more: Recap

StFX 2 vs. UNB 5 (Box Score)
(FREDERICTON, N.B.) Tyler Boland, Oliver LeBlanc, and Kris Bennett each had two points on the night as the UNB Varsity Reds defeated the St FX X-Men 5-2, clinching first place in the Atlantic University Sport standings. Goals for the Varsity Reds in the win came from Boland, LeBlanc (PP), Stephen Anderson, Mark Simpson, and Alexandre Goulet (PP), while Mark Tremaine and Jagger Dirk got on the board from the X-Men in the loss. Saint Mary's 0 vs. Acadia 3 (Box Score)
(WOLFVILLE, N.S.) The Acadia Axemen ended their regular season on home ice on a high note, defeating the U SPORTS No. 6 ranked Saint Mary's Huskies 3-0. Axemen goaltender and Subway First Star of the Night Robert Steeves turned aside all 24 shots by the Huskies for his second shutout of the season. Read more: Recap


Saturday, Feb. 10

Acadia 3 vs. Moncton 2 (OT) (Box Score)
(MONCTON, N.B.) The Acadia Axemen finished out the 2017-18 men's hockey regular season with a matchup against the Universite de Moncton Aigles Bleus on Saturday night in Moncton. With things tied at 2-2 after three periods of play, the game headed into overtime. In overtime, Axemen netminder Robert Steeves made two crucial saves to keep the Axemen hopes alive; shortly after Moncton's Vanier-Guenet took a penalty for cross-checking Axemen leading scorer Stephen Harper, and like poetic justice, Harper made him pay as he ripped home a shot at 2:47 of the overtime session to give Acadia a 3-2 victory. In addition to scoring the game winner, Harper locked up the AUS scoring leader title with 46 points in 30 games. Dalhousie 1 vs. UNB 4 (Box Score)
(FREDERICTON, N.B.) Kris Bennett had three points and Cam Brace had a goal and an assist as the UNB Varsity Reds beat the Dalhousie Tigers 4-1 in the final game of the regular season. Bennett sealed the game with an empty net goal late in the third period. The rookie forward finished as the regular season leader in both goals and points for the Varsity Reds, with 18 goals and 38 points in 30 games. Bennett was also named Subway Player of the Game. Rylan Parenteau made 19 saves for the Varsity Reds while Jacob Fancy stopped 25 shots in a losing effort for Dalhousie. Read more: Recap 

StFX 0 vs. UPEI 5 (Box Score)
(CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I.) The UPEI Panthers closed out the regular season in dominant fashion with a 5-0 win over the nation's No. 3 ranked St. FX X-Men. Goals for the Panthers in their victory came from Darcy Ashley, Marcus Power, and Cody payne, with Kameron Kielly adding a regular strength and short-handed goal.
