2009 Atlantic University Sport AGM Highlights

May 12, 2009 (HALIFAX, NS) - The 2009 Annual General Meeting of Atlantic University Sport was hosted by St. Thomas University and wrapped up last week in Fredericton, NB.

Phil Currie, Executive Director of Atlantic University Sport, chaired the annual meeting attended by representatives of all eleven member schools.

"Our Atlantic University Sport members continue to lead the way in advancing university sport and as usual our meetings were very productive," said Currie, "Each year, a number of significant decisions are made during these meetings, indicating the organization is committed to improving the quality of our sports and increasing opportunities for our student-athletes. It was also a nice opportunity to formally recognize Mr. Jack Drover and Mr. Al Scott, colleagues who have served university sport and the association for many years."

Scott retired this past fall after a 29-year career with Dalhousie University, while Drover will retire in June following a 35-year career at Mount Allison University.

Some of the highlights and key developments of the meeting are as follows:

The Atlantic University Sport men's hockey playoffs will now consist of a best 2-of-3 quarter-final round, followed by best 3-of-5 semi-finals and a best 3-of-5 championship series. Previously, the first two rounds were a best 2-of-3 series, with the championship series consisting of a best 3-of-5. As in the past, the top six teams following regular season play will qualify for the playoffs, with the first and second place teams receiving byes to the semi-final round.
  • Women's Hockey Playoff Format Adjusted:
The AUS women's hockey playoff format will now move to a 4-day championship beginning next season and the format will be similar to that of the CIS Women's Hockey Championship. The top six teams following regular season play will qualify and be separated into two pools of three teams. Each team will now play two round robin games with the top teams in each pool playing for the championship. The 2010 Subway AUS Women's Hockey Championship will be hosted by the Université de Moncton, Feb. 25-28, 2010.
  • Men's and Women's Soccer point structure changed:

Beginning this fall, in all regular season games, three points in the league standings shall be awarded for a win, one point for a tie and zero points for a loss. There will continue to be a single division with the top six teams following regular season play advancing to the AUS Championship.
