2009 Atlantic University Sport AGM Highlights
May 12, 2009 (HALIFAX, NS) - The 2009 Annual General Meeting of Atlantic University Sport was hosted by St. Thomas University and wrapped up last week in Fredericton, NB.
Phil Currie, Executive Director of Atlantic University Sport, chaired the annual meeting attended by representatives of all eleven member schools.
"Our Atlantic University Sport members continue to lead the way in advancing
university sport and as usual our meetings were very productive," said Currie,
"Each year, a number of significant decisions are made during these meetings,
indicating the organization is committed to improving the quality of our sports and
increasing opportunities for our student-athletes. It was also a nice opportunity to
formally recognize Mr. Jack Drover and Mr. Al Scott, colleagues who have served university
sport and the association for many years."
Scott retired this past fall after a 29-year career with Dalhousie University, while
Drover will retire in June following a 35-year career at Mount Allison University.
Some of the highlights and key developments of the meeting are as follows:
- Men's Hockey Playoff Format Extended:
The Atlantic University Sport men's hockey playoffs will now consist of a best
2-of-3 quarter-final round, followed by best 3-of-5 semi-finals and a best 3-of-5
championship series. Previously, the first two rounds were a best 2-of-3 series, with the
championship series consisting of a best 3-of-5. As in the past, the top six teams
following regular season play will qualify for the playoffs, with the first and second
place teams receiving byes to the semi-final round.
- Women's Hockey Playoff Format Adjusted:
The AUS women's hockey playoff format will now move to a 4-day championship
beginning next season and the format will be similar to that of the CIS Women's Hockey
Championship. The top six teams following regular season play will qualify and be
separated into two pools of three teams. Each team will now play two round robin games
with the top teams in each pool playing for the championship. The 2010 Subway AUS Women's
Hockey Championship will be hosted by the Université de Moncton, Feb. 25-28, 2010.
- Men's and Women's Soccer point structure changed:
Atlantic University Sport men's and women's soccer regular season matches will no
longer be 4-point and 2-point games in the standings. Beginning this fall, in all regular
season games, three points in the league standings shall be awarded for a win, one point
for a tie and zero points for a loss. There will continue to be a single division with the
top six teams following regular season play advancing to the AUS Championship.
- University of Prince Edward Island to host 2010 Subway AUS Swimming
Championship:
The 2010 Subway AUS Swimming Championship will be hosted by the University of
Prince Edward Island, February 12-14, 2010. UPEI added swimming as a varsity sport in
2007-08, UPEI's Eric Beaton won the school's first ever AUS Championship medal this past
season (bronze - 50m free) and now the 2010 AUS Championship meet will be the first
sanctioned AUS swimming event hosted by the Panthers program.
Other championship hosts for the 2009-10 season include the following:
a. Cape Breton University will host the 2010 women's basketball championship, Feb.
26-28, 2010.
b. Saint Mary's University will host the 2010 women's volleyball championship, Feb. 19-21,
2010.
c. Saint Mary's University will host the 2009 cross country championship, Oct. 31, 2009.
d. Dalhousie University will host the 2009 men's soccer championship, Nov. 6-8, 2009.
e. The host of the 2009 AUS women's soccer championship will be confirmed following the
CIS AGM in June.
