Fundraiser proceeds to help send Canada’s men’s hockey team to 26th Winter Universiade in Trentino, Italy as they go for gold
(FREDERICTON, N.B.) – This winter, the world will see what Team Canada’s men’s hockey team is made of at the World Universiade in Trentino, Italy December 11-21. But they have to get there first. The 22-man team, which will be comprised entirely of players from the eight teams in the Atlantic University Sport conference, is fundraising to supplement the cost of their trip. Team general manager Roger Shannon invites fans and supporters from all over Atlantic Canada to join them for the Atlantic University Hockey Celebrity Golf Event Monday, August 26 at Kingswood Golf course in Fredericton, N.B.
“This is going to be a fantastic day of golf and prizes with a chance to meet some impressive AUS student-athletes and future and former NHLers,” says Shannon. “And it’s all for a great cause: to send these young men to a renowned international event and show the world what the best in AUS hockey are capable of.”
Considered to be one of Canada’s premiere golf courses, Kingswood was named Best New Golf Course by Golf Digest in 2003. The tournament format will be a four-person scramble along with the addition of a celebrity golfer playing alongside and competing with each team. Participating celebrities include St. Louis Blues goaltender Jake Allen, 2012-2013 QMJHL First-Team All-Star and Emile Bouchard Trophy winner, Kevin Gagne (Anaheim Ducks prospect), as well as 2011 Minnesota Wild first-round draft pick, Zack Phillips. St. Thomas University athletic director Mike Eagles who boasts an impressive 16-year career in the NHL along with a number of other AUS student-athletes, will also play alongside participating groups.
The entry fee has been set at $600 per team to play or $1,000 to play and earn corporate sponsorship. The day will kick off with a shotgun start at 1 p.m., followed by a barbecue and a live auction, with Team Canada head coach Gardiner MacDougall as auctioneer. Group closest-to-the-hole prizes will be awarded on each of the course’s par 3s. Participants will also try their hand at a hole-in-one on all four par 3s for the chance to drive home in a new Dodge Ram, Grand Caravan or Jeep Wrangler Journey sponsored by Summit Dodge in Fredericton.
With their team entry, players also gain complimentary admission to a QMJHL pre-season game Sunday, August 25, between the Moncton Wildcats and the defending Memorial Cup champion Halifax Mooseheads, 4 p.m. at the Aitken Centre.
