March 8, 2007 (HALIFAX, NS) - The second
Atlantic University Sport Men's Final 6 Basketball Quarterfinal on Thursday night featured
the #3-seeded Acadia Axemen and the #6-seeded Dalhousie Tigers.
The fans in the Metro Centre were treated to a battle from the opening tip
to the final horn.
The first half was a back and forth affair and got interesting when
Acadia's Achuil Lual picked up a quick two fouls and saw himself on the bench for big
chunk of the first half.
With Lual on the bench, the Tigers attacked the basket and were able to
chip into an early Acadia lead. Led by Germain Bendague's 9 points, Dalhousie only trailed
the Axemen by two at the break. Acadia's Luckern Dieu's had a team-high 10 points at half.
The second half was filled with more of the same type of action, with both
teams exchanging the lead on a number of occasions. Player of the game Jordan Sheriko
finally took over, making a string of baskets to pace the Axemen and give them a lead late
in the second half which they would not relinquish. Sheriko finished with 18 points, going
4-of-5 from beyond the arc while Germain Bendegue posted 24 points and 7 rebounds for the
Tigers.
The semi finals are now set with Acadia playing StFX Friday night at 8pm,
and Saint Mary's facing off with Cape Breton at 6pm. The winners will go on to represent
the Atlantic conference at the CIS Final 8 next weekend right here in Halifax.
