Marie Soleil Deschenes the UPEI Panthers women’s hockey team is the Subway Atlantic University Sport Female Athlete of the Week for the week ending January 13, 2013.
Deschenes, a first-year goalie from Ile-Perrot, Que., registered back-to-back road wins this past weekend as the defending AUS champion Panthers improved to 10-6-1 on the season and moved to within one point of third place in the Atlantic conference standings.
In Saturday’s 3-0 shutout victory over the Mount Allison Mounties, Marie Soleil stopped all 19 shots she faced for her second shutout of the season. In Sunday’s 4-3 overtime win over Moncton, Deschenes turned aside another 20 shots for her fifth win of the year as UPEI fought back from a 2-0 first period deficit to defeat the host Aigles Bleues. It marked the first road win for the Panthers program over Moncton since February 19, 2006.
Marie Soleil improved to record to 5-1 with the pair of victories and her goals against average of 1.35 currently ranks second in the AUS, while her save percentage of 0.932 ranks third in the conference.

Wayne Savage of the UPEI Panthers men’s hockey team is the Subway Atlantic University Sport Male Athlete of the Week for the week ending January 13, 2013.
Savage, a third-year goalie from St. Thomas, Ont., led UPEI to a pair of road wins this past weekend over CIS top 10-ranked teams as the Panthers won their fourth game in a row to improve to 10-9-1 on the season.
In Friday night’s 2-1 victory over the No. 5-ranked Saint Mary’s Huskies in Halifax, Wayne turned aside 29-of-30 shots on goal for his eighth win of the season. In Saturday night’s 3-2 triumph over the No. 10-ranked StFX X-Men in Antigonish, Savage added a 36-save performance to his weekend totals as he picked up his ninth victory in 12 starts this year.
Wayne’s 0.935 save percentage currently leads the AUS conference, while his 2.21 goals against average is third among AUS goalies.
